Sedation Dentistry

Smiley Faces Dental, located in the Hudson Heights neighborhood of New York City, offers sedation dentistry for children who are anxious about dental treatment or in need of multiple procedures. The practice’s dentists possess extensive expertise in providing sedation dentistry to children and teens.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help a child relax during routine or more complex dental procedures. Children, as well as adults, are often anxious about dental procedures. Sedation dentistry uses oral and/or intravenous medications. Sedation dentistry is a valuable tool in enabling anxious patients to undergo necessary dental treatments.

Is special training required?

The American Dental Association (ADA) mandates that dentists who administer sedation dentistry receive specialized training in the procedure and in handling any potential complications that could arise. Too, the practice’s office staff must be trained in monitoring patients vital signs while sedated. At Smiley Faces Dental, the staff is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the office has the necessary equipment to monitor patients and respond in the rare instance of a complication.

How should my child prepare for sedation?

The office will provide detailed preparation instructions to all parents prior to performing sedation dentistry services. In general, these include no eating or drinking in advance of sedation, to prevent vomiting and choking. Loose-fitting clothing is recommended for comfort and easy application of the monitoring equipment. Parents are asked to bring a copy of their child’s medical history, and a list of any medications, vitamins, or supplements that he or she takes. In many cases, the child will be given an oral or inhaled medication at the time of arrival which will take about 20 minutes to take effect.

Is dental sedation safe for my child?

Yes. Dental sedation has a strong safety record. Smiley Faces Dental’s professional team pays close attention to every detail to ensure that sedation, as well as, all procedures are as safe as possible. Prior to sedation, the dentist will take a complete medical history and go over at-home preparations, such as withholding food and drink. In addition, every child is monitored by a hygienist during the procedure and until he or she is fully awake and recovered.
