Pulp Therapy

What is pulp therapy?

Also known as nerve treatment/baby root canal, The pulp is the soft inner tissue of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
Pulp therapy aims to save a tooth that has a diseased or injured pulp. It’s similar to a root canal in adult teeth, but with some key differences for baby teeth.

How is it done?

This involves removing only the diseased portion of the pulp in the crown of the tooth, while leaving the healthy pulp in the roots. A medicated filling is then placed to prevent infection and promote healing. This is the more common procedure for baby teeth.

Why save a baby tooth with pulp therapy?

Maintain space: Baby teeth hold space for the permanent teeth to erupt correctly. Losing a baby tooth too early can lead to crowding and the need for orthodontics later.
Proper chewing: Healthy teeth are needed for proper chewing and nutrition.
Speech development: Front teeth play a role in speech.
Avoid pain and infection: Treating an infected tooth relieves pain and prevents the spread of infection.

What happens after pulp therapy?

Often, a crown is placed on the tooth after pulp therapy to protect and strengthen it.
