Sealants

What are sealants?

Sealants are thin, plastic coatings painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth, mostly the back teeth (molars and premolars).
Think of them as a protective shield that covers the natural grooves and pits on these surfaces.

Why are sealants recommended?

Effective Cavity Prevention: The primary reason for recommending sealants is their proven ability to significantly reduce the risk of cavities (tooth decay) on the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars). These surfaces have natural grooves and pits that are difficult to clean thoroughly with a toothbrush, making them prime spots for food and bacteria to get trapped and cause decay. Sealants smooth out these surfaces, creating a barrier against these cavity-causing culprits.
Protecting Vulnerable Teeth: Newly erupted permanent molars, which typically come in around age 6, are particularly susceptible to decay because their enamel is not yet fully mature, and children may not have the best brushing habits yet. Applying sealants to these new teeth provides immediate protection during this vulnerable period.
Painless Application: The application of sealants is a quick and painless process. It typically involves cleaning the tooth surface, applying a special solution to help the sealant bond, and then painting on the liquid sealant, which hardens quickly with a special light. No drilling or numbing shots are usually required.
